The material master is one of the most critical data objects in SAP SD. While it's maintained centrally and shared across modules, SD depends on a set of specific views that directly impact sales processing, pricing, and delivery.
In SD, the key material master views are:
1. Sales: Sales Org. 1 – This view contains information such as delivering plant, sales unit of measure, and tax classification. For example, if you have different tax rules for domestic and export sales, this is where you assign them.
2. Sales: Sales Org. 2 – Includes important grouping fields like item category group and account assignment group, which drive how the system determines pricing, G/L postings, and item category in sales documents.
3. Sales: General/Plant – Contains shipping data such as loading group and availability check, critical for determining shipping point and ATP logic.
Configuration Path:
SPRO → Logistics – General → Material Master → Settings for Key Fields → Data Relevant for Sales and Distribution
Integration Points:
• With MM, for stock management and procurement data.
• With PP, for production lead times influencing availability checks.
• With WM/EWM, for picking location determination.
Example from Projects:
In a rollout for a manufacturing client, the absence of the correct item category group in Sales Org. 2 caused all orders for configurable products to be processed as standard items, bypassing variant configuration logic. Fixing the master data resolved the issue instantly without ABAP changes.
Consultant Tip:
Always maintain the material master using transaction MM01 or MM02 by selecting only the necessary views for the sales area you're working with. Avoid mass maintenance without a tested LSMW or data migration cockpit template — one incorrect field can cause delivery blocks or billing errors.
